The Commission has launched a new section on its website dedicated to providing important guidance and information for consumers.
Amongst the issues that are tackled are warnings about the latest scams and guidance on how to recognise and report them. There is also information about opening, closing and switching bank accounts, things to bear in mind when considering taking out a loan or an insurance policy, information about pensions as well as top tips about getting financial advice.
Speaking about the launch of this new initiative, Director General, William Mason said “One of the Commission’s underlying objectives is the protection of consumers. The creation of the Conduct Unit in July 2013 brought together a lot of the Commission’s work on issues of interest and concern to consumers. This latest initiative by the Conduct Unit, following our implementation of Guernsey Financial Advice Standards, underlines the Commission’s commitment to helping consumers to get a fair deal”.
Other features available from the website include links to websites where additional advice, support and information is available such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Channel Islands Ombudsman, Guernsey’s Mediation Service and the Association of Guernsey Banks and Guernsey Police.
Rosemary Stevens, the Commission’s Assistant Director of its Conduct Unit said “the Commission is delighted to be able to launch this new service which we hope consumers will find useful and informative. What we are trying to do is to make the latest advice and information more accessible to the Guernsey public to assist them when they are looking for financial advice or considering taking out a financial services product. We also want to try to provide timely warnings on how to avoid falling victim to the various scams which operate within the financial services sector”.
